    Stargazing for sleep The benefits of the natural Stargazing for sleep 

The benefits of the natural world on our nervous system and general wellbeing are well known, but we mainly commune with nature during the day. The purpose of stargazing or 'skygazing' before bed is to help the brain downshift from the roll of intellectualising and drop into more of a felt sense in space. This is similar to the way we drop out of 'reality' and into the wonderful world of sleep and the alternate reality of the dreamscape. 

For most of us it is impossible to intellectually grasp the vastness of the sky, space and the universe, so we naturally shift into a sense of awe. When we truly experience ourselves in space, we drop trying to manage the minutia of our lives, opening up to greater flow and the majesty of life. This messages the brain that nothing more is required now, basically, to give up trying. 

If you are lucky enough to have access to an outdoor space, spend some time connecting to the night sky before getting into bed. Find a relaxing position for your body, either sitting or lying down, making sure you are nice and warm with a blanket or coat and just look up. Allow your gaze at the sky to be soft. Avoid talking now. 
It's nice if there are visible stars, but if you cannot see stars, it's still a valuable practice to be outside, looking up into the sky, even imagining the stars that lay beyond.
